Community Heritage Leader Traineeship Museums & Galleries Edinburgh

The Learning Opportunity

Funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund and co-ordinated by Next Step Initiative, an exciting learning opportunity has opened up for a Community Heritage Leader Trainee from a BME background to join Museums & Galleries Edinburgh (MGE) for a fixed term of 14 months.

Working closely with our Outreach and Access Managers, the Trainee Leader will build and develop relationships with local groups and stakeholders to devise and deliver a range of community-led, socially impactful programmes, enabling wider and deeper engagement with heritage across the city.

MGE is committed to partnership working, becoming a more representative Service, and to supporting health and wellbeing through participation with culture in the community. The Trainee Leader will lead our work in developing a Community Heritage Framework which aligns with the Council’s new Culture Strategy, setting out our values, objectives and aspirations to create socially impactful collaborations, focussing on areas of the city which are currently under-served.

They will also be involved in work to develop proposals for a new collections centre which will serve as a community hub for a range of cultural activity and engagement in the future.

The Trainee Leader will work closely with the Museums Management Team and will have opportunity to input on a range of associated, strategic service-wide issues. They will also have dedicated time for study, and support from the sector development body Museums Galleries Scotland to achieve specific museums and leadership qualifications.

They will be based at Museum of Edinburgh, however extensive work in-person in the community, across our venues and remotely from home, is anticipated. Some evening and weekend working will be required.
