Main Purpose of Post: To develop the capacity of new and existing  African and Caribbean Community Organisations and social Enterprises organisations in Glasgow and West of Scotland area by providing high-quality information, business growth and continuity support, and mentoring, training and developmental support.

Salary: £15,839 per annum, with 4% Pension Contributions and Employer’s NI & Tax

We are looking for an exceptional and experienced project Social Enterprise Officer to join our team to deliver a new project across Glasgow and West of Scotland, working with African and Caribbean & Ethnic Minority Communities, local communities, businesses and voluntary sector partners to test new approaches to empowering and mobilizing communities.

You will be part of a rapidly growing social enterprise; our work builds strong, resilient African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities and gives people the tools to make real lasting changes in their lives.

Your Role

As part of the team at Next Step Initiative, you will deliver the new Dream to Reality Programme. You will successfully develop and deliver effective capacity building support to African and Caribbean Community organisations and Social Enterprises at all stages of development, including start-ups and ensure high-quality delivery

The Project involves developing the capacity of new and existing African and Caribbean community organizations, and social enterprises organizations in Glasgow and West of Scotland area, providing high-quality information, business growth and continuity support, and mentoring, training, and development support. It also involves helping these organizations and community to link to policy and articulates their issues and needs, so as to allow them to influence policy.

What you will need to succeed

You will have experience of successfully leading the development of short-term, high impact programme that supports the development of new approaches. You will be skilled at building relationships and communicating with a range of stakeholders including community members, business leaders, and senior public sector leaders. You will be creative and innovative, designing new activities on the basis of initial findings, and flexing your approach. You will be able to produce high quality influential reports, and present them in a compelling to influence change. You can facilitate, encourage, motivate and inspire. Like anything at Next Step Initiative, the work is fast moving, creative and varied, so we are looking for an exceptional individual who will be comfortable and experienced in leading this fixed term high impact and exciting project to influence change for the future.

Main Duties

  1. To deliver effective capacity building support to African and Caribbean Community organisations and Social Enterprises at all stages of development, including start-ups;
  2. To develop and deliver organisational support to 20 organisations including 3 years business planning, governance, funding and bidding/tendering;
  3. To provide targeted mentoring support to African and Caribbean organisations and Social Enterprises through ‘health checks’ and specific advice, particularly those organisations in a crisis situation;
  4. To work with colleagues to implement systems for measuring, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of capacity building approaches;
  5. Provide business and mentoring support, and set up of successful 15 social enterprises and Community Organisations within the African and Caribbean/BME communities to be scalable, sustainable, in addressing the needs of their communities across Glasgow and West of Scotland
  6. Plan, Coordinate and Deliver 20 workshops on Enterprise Continuity, Enterprising Model, Growth, Governance and Sustainability to over 20 African and Caribbean Community Organisations and Social Enterprises, to over 400 members.
  7. Support and develop a minimum of 15 successful Community Organisations and Social Enterprises within the African and Caribbean/BME Communities across Glasgow and West of Scotland
  8. Coordinate and produce 6 short film/documentary on the progress of these African and Caribbean Community Organisations and Social Enterprises.
  9. Coordinate, manage and develop the NSI Incubation Hub and its activities
  10. Devise Strategy and the implementation of a 3-5 years plan for the profitability and sustainability of the NSI Incubation Hub. Responsible for the viability and sustainability of these facilities and its services.
  11. Develop and establish a new strategic partnership with mainstreams public and private sector, so as to open more access and opportunities to more African and Caribbean Community Organisations and Social enterprises and their members.
  12. To effectively manage a portfolio of casework with competing demands and produce a monthly/ quarterly report;
  13. To actively promote Next Step Initiative including seeking new business opportunities;
  14. To contribute to updating the organisation’s website, e-bulletins, newsletters and other publications to promote best practice;
  15. To contribute to cross-organisation initiatives including bid/funding proposals, quality accreditation work and other projects.
  16. To take personal responsibility for contributing to high quality standards in customer relations, service delivery, project management and communications.

Essential requirements:

  • Experience of working within the third sector and with African and Caribbean Communities, or, extensive experience of community development work and supporting African and Caribbean Community organisations and Social Enterprises;
  • Good understanding of the governance and policy issues facing African and Caribbean Community organisations and Social Enterprises in Scotland;
  • An understanding of company law and/or charity law;
  • Experience of supporting organisations and people to develop their capacity and operate to best practice, including business, understanding the policy environment and financial planning
  • Experience of planning and delivering training sessions;
  • Emotionally intelligent, able to build and sustain positive relationships with key stakeholders
  • Comfortable networking and representing the organisation;

Next Step Initiative is a leading Ethnic Minority Social enterprise and Charity established in 2009, that works to empower, improve and transform the quality of life of African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities in Scotland.

Next Step Initiative, through the support of its strategic heritage partners, has created this unique and exciting new skills training programme. ‘The Ethnic Minority Career Museum and Built Environment Heritage Programme’, (EMCMBEHP).

EMCMBEHP aim is to focus on widening and strengthening skills development and access of people from the African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities across Scotland into the world of both the museum and built environment heritage sectors. EMCMBEHP is supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund’s National Skills for the Future Initiative.

EMCMBEHP comprises of grant-bursary supported training placements for 2018/2019., hosted by leading heritage organisations in Scotland. Host partners include; Historic Environment Scotland, Edinburgh Museums, and Galleries, Scottish Canals, Scottish Water Trust, Edinburgh World Heritage, Archaeology Scotland.

Placement offers trainees the opportunity to gain a rich variety of skills at the frontline of heritage practice. Trainees are supervised and mentored by experienced professionals, both in their host organisations and beyond, to work on a range of activities to acquire a selection a selection of heritage management skills, for example; Learning and interpretation, Collections Management, Conservation, Audience Development, Marketing, and Fundraising. Placements enable all trainees to progress towards and achieve the Industry relevant SVQ or equivalent accreditations.

Selection Criteria: Experience & Skills

  • Applicants must have a proven enthusiasm for and interest in culture and heritage and a genuine wish to pursue a career in the sector.
  • No specific academic qualifications are required but the trainees should be able to express themselves clearly in spoken and written English, have reasonable arithmetic and mathematical skills and have good attention to details.
  • Traineeship is only open to people from African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities across Scotland

Next Step Initiative (NSI) has created ‘’ The Ethnic Minority Career Museum & Built Environment Heritage Programme’’ to focus specifically on the people of African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities across Scotland on widening and strengthening skills development within both the Museum and Built Environment Heritage Sectors. This new initiative will help to specifically address both sector-specific skills shortages and the under-representation of African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities in both the Museums and Built Environment Heritage Sector’s workforce across Scotland.

You will be part of an innovative and learning organisation; our work builds strong, resilient African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities and gives people the tools to make real lasting changes in their lives.

Your Role:
As part of the team at Next Step Initiative, you will coordinate, manage and deliver ‘’ The Ethnic Minority Career Museum & Built Environment Heritage Programme ‘’.

The project involves  the delivery of high-quality work-based training to people of African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities across Scotland in both Museum and Built Environment Heritage, outreach awareness raising events in the community, capacity building programme with Scottish Museums and Built Environment Sector on how  to engage and work with African and Ethnic Minority Communities, provide support to 16 full time  paid accredited work-based training and placements opportunities for African and Caribbean/Ethnic Minority Communities’ individuals within Scottish Museums/Built Environment and bring together Scottish Museums/Built Environment heritage organisations through a project steering group to support the long term sustainability of project activities. A key part of your role will be to lead the delivery of the project as well as package up all the learning and insights from the work into several engaging and well as written reports, tools, and other visual outputs and dissemination these through events, roundtables, and other communications.

The National Theatre of Scotland is passionate about representing Scotland’s many diverse voices, skills and stories in its work and workforce. 

In 2011, the National Theatre of Scotland formally recognised ethnic minority communities as one of three groups of Scots most underrepresented across the organisation’s full range of activities, including representation amongst the board, staff, artists, productions and audiences.

Over the past 6 years, we have supported theatre artists from ethnic minority communities to develop their skills and make new theatre productions.  

We have also recruited a small number of staff and board members who reflect broader ethnic diversity within the workforce.

However, we want to inspire more individuals from ethnic minority communities to explore a career in theatre.

Theatre is made by many people in very different roles, not just by actors and writers.  The National Theatre of Scotland employs over 40 permanent staff across marketing, press, digital, producing, finance, administration, fundraising, learning and participation, stage management, building management, design, technical and artist development.

In 2017, with support from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation and the Next Step Initiative, we are offering five individuals from ethnic minority communities, based in Scotland, the opportunity to undertake a five-week long paid internship, across any department/activity within the Company.

Each selected individual will be paid a weekly fee of £400. In addition, the Company will pay a weekly commuting allowance of up to £23 per day to anyone who lives more than 25 miles from the Company’s offices in Rockvilla (G4 9TL), where the internships will be based.

The internship will be delivered in three parts:

  1. The full cohort of 5 interns will spend five days (11-5pm) at our offices (4-8 December 2017) to be given an introduction to each department, its staff and its work.

 

  1. In December, the Company’s Director of Artistic Development will work with each intern and relevant heads of department in the Company, to develop a bespoke learning plan for each intern.  

 

This will marry together specific forthcoming opportunities within the organisation, and the bespoke needs/wishes of the individual.

 

  1. Four weeks working within one department/across a number of departments, in line with a bespoke development plan.  

 

These four weeks can be worked on consecutive, non-consecutive weeks or day by day (20 days in total) within the scope of the internship, and in line with the needs and availability of the intern between January – March 2018.

Individuals must:

  • be aged 18 years or older
  • self-identify as from an ethnic minority community
  • live in Scotland
  • have good written and verbal communication skills

 

Individuals must not be:

  • undertaking fulltime university/higher education
  • a professional or emergent theatre artist

You will successfully develop and deliver effective capacity building support to African and Caribbean Community organisations and Social Enterprises at all stages of development, including start-ups and ensure high quality delivery

You will have extensive financial and book keeping experience with a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Access packages.  You will have responsibilities for assisting the financial administrator in all financial administration duties, including producing reports on income and expenditure for cost centres, bank reconciliations, cash flow, budgets, external and internal invoicing, raising cheques, and producing management accounts. You will also be responsible for maintaining a tidy and well organised office, minute taking, answering telephones, reception duties, supporting events, and providing general administrative support to staff.  Good communication and ICT skills are also essential for this post.
